He grew up in the bosom of a humble family, and began his football career in the Brazilian club (Cruzeiro), where he performed a distinguished performance that caught the attention of the Dutch club Eindhoven, who contracted with him at the age of 17. In the Netherlands, he achieved two distinguished seasons (52 goals in the first and 56 goals in the second), which prompted Barcelona to sign him, and then transferred to Inter Milan, where he suffered several injuries. In 2002, after the World Cup hosted by Korea and Japan, in which he excelled, Real Madrid included him without hesitation.
